Fierce Winds Leave Numerous Homes Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals advised to stay indoors as strong winds strike the nation.

Severe gales reaching speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have left around 90,000 homes experiencing outages and forced agencies to call off over 100 flights, as reported by local media.

The winds are affecting the whole South Island and southern sections of the North Island, per the weather forecasting body.

New Zealand authorities have released rare high-level wind alerts - the top caution category - in central regions such as Canterbury and Wellington.

People have been advised to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and get ready for more utility disruptions.

Broad Impact and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss seems to be impacting homes predominantly in the southern region, although officials state that power was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have stated that in some places roofs have been ripped off houses, and trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the gusts.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being struck by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a female was pushed toward moving cars on a road by a intensive burst, in a event that was recorded in a widely shared car camera footage.

Flights in and out of the city have been suspended as a result of the weather, whereas some roads and libraries are shut down.

Simultaneously authorities in Canterbury have issued a crisis declaration, to support recovery activities.
